you adjusted your phone against the stack of books on your dresser. “okay, let’s do this,” you murmured to yourself, hitting the record button on your phone.
”hey guys! i’m obsessed with this look today,” you announced, striking a pose. you did a slow, deliberate spin, making sure to showcase every detail of your outfit. “the tee is thrifted, obviously, and these jeans are actually billie’s, but don’t tell her i stole them again.”
from the other room, a muffled “i can hear you!” was followed by billie’s distinctive, throaty laugh, a sound that always managed to both irritate and endear you in equal measure.
“billie! come show them your fit!” you called out, still filming, your voice echoing through the apartment.
a few seconds later, billie appeared in the doorway, a vision of casual comfort. she was wearing an oversized, faded dark green t-shirt, the sleeves pushed up to reveal her slender wrists, paired with comfortable basketball shorts and fuzzy slippers.
a perfect illustration of her effortless style. her usually vibrant black hair was pulled back in a messy bun, a few stray strands escaping to frame her face.
she had that slightly sleepy, tousled look that only someone who’d spent the night and morning immersed in music could achieve.
“dude, i look like i just rolled out of bed,” billie said, shuffling closer, her hands shoved deep into the pockets of her shorts, her movements languid and relaxed.
“you always look good, shut up,” you replied, turning back to the camera with a bright, practiced smile. “and this is what my current girlfriend is wearing today.”
billie’s head snapped up so fast you half-expected to hear a crack. “current?” her eyebrows shot up, a skeptical look dawning on her face. “current girlfriend?”
you maintained your neutral expression, continuing to film. “yeah, i love how oversized everything is on her. very comfy, very billie.”
“yo, hold up,” billie stepped closer, that familiar little crease appearing between her eyebrows. she shook her head slightly, her eyes studying your face intently.
”what do you mean current girlfriend? like, as opposed to what? your former girlfriend? your future girlfriend?”
you kept your voice casual, your expression carefully controlled. “i mean, you’re my girlfriend currently, aren’t you?”
billie tilted her head, her expression a mixture of confusion and amusement. “i… yeah, but why are you saying it like that? current? that’s weird, dude.” she pulled her hands from her pockets, gesturing vaguely. “that sounds like i’m temporary or something.”
“how else would i say it?” you asked, your voice maintaining its casual tone, though your mouth was twitching slightly. the urge to burst out laughing was rapidly escalating.
“i don’t know, just… your girlfriend? like normal? seriously, what’s with the ‘current’ thing? that’s freaking me out a little,” billie said, continuing to study your face with an intense, almost comical focus.
“it’s fine,” you said, biting the inside of your cheek to suppress a giggle. “just showing off our fits.” billie studied your face for another moment, then shrugged, a slight smile playing on her lips.
“okay, whatever. but yeah, i look like i just rolled out of bed compared to you.” she gestured at your put-together outfit. “you always make me look like a slob.”
“you look perfect,” you said, the genuine affection in your voice making billie’s cheeks flush a delicate shade of pink.
“shut up,” billie mumbled, but she was smiling now, a genuine, unadulterated smile that reached her eyes. “are you done filming? i want a smoothie.”
“alright, now me and my current girlfriend are going to make some smoothies,” you repeated to the camera, fighting to maintain your composure. the camera shook slightly as your body vibrated with barely-suppressed laughter.
billie’s eyebrows shot up again. “okay, now you’re definitely being weird.” she crossed her arms, studying your face intently. “why do you keep saying it like that? current, current, current- it’s freaking me out a little.”
