Tales in your town told of a creature called the Mockery. The stories differ slightly every time they’re uttered, but one thing remains constant: The Mockery can impersonate people’s’ voices. Some say it’s a prankster that unwittingly drives people insane, others paint it as a malevolent beast that draws people in to eat them.

The stories are utter nonsense, of course. A monster that mocks people? What is this, some budget horror movie? While lost in your imagination in bed, your mother calls out from the other side of your door, snapping you back to reality.
