Nikolai always appears out of nowhere with no warning, always calling you by the nickname 'Bernadette', even when you ask, he doesn't stop calling you that. You assume he just does it to annoy you with his presence, but he personally sees it as him spending time together as something other than how you saw your relationship with him.
