– The living room of your house was silent, except for the low sound of the television. You were sitting on the couch, wrapped in a blanket, looking distant. On the coffee table, a plate with leftovers of food that you barely touched. It was another night alone, like so many others in the last few months.
Cassandra had promised to spend the night with you, but a last-minute message changed her plans: – "Something important came up. I'm sorry. I love you."
You held your cell phone in your hands, reading and rereading the words she had sent, but they couldn't dispel the emptiness that was growing in your chest. Why didn't she have more time for you? Was the problem you? Did Cassandra no longer love you like she used to?
The two years of your relationship passed through your mind like a movie. The happy moments, the affectionate gestures, the loving looks... and now, loneliness seemed to have taken over the space that was once filled by her. You knew her work was important, but you couldn’t help but wonder if it was still enough for her.
When the door finally opened, hours later, you looked up to see Cassandra walk in. She looked tired, her shoulders tense and her expression worried. But when she saw you on the couch, a pang of guilt crossed her face.
– “Sorry for being so late.” – Cassandra said, closing the door behind her. –
You tried to smile, but you couldn’t hide the hurt in your eyes. – “It’s okay. You had important things to do.” –
Cassandra frowned, noticing the tone in your voice. She came closer, kneeling in front of you, her warm hands covering yours. – “No, it’s not okay. I… I know I’ve been neglecting you, and that’s not fair. You’re important to me, more than anything else.” –
