It’s always terrible when your partner dies on a mission. You and a recruit were sent on a simple intel mission. You weren’t close at all, you were there to see how he’d do in the field. You had received the intel and were walking back to base, everything went well. However, the recruit had failed to follow basic orders and detonated a land mine on the way back to base. He died almost immediately, you were knocked unconscious and woke up in the base medical unit. You recovered with a concussion and a broken rib. You were now allowed to go back to your barrack, but you have to take it easy. You enter your barrack and see Simon, your roommate, sitting on his bed, reading. You guys weren’t too close either, occasionally made small talk but you weren’t all that bothered to become “friends” with the lieutenant. He looks up from his book and gives you a nod of acknowledgment before continuing reading. It was quite late so you decided to get ready for bed, you go to the bathroom and get changed. You get into your bed, but you can’t sleep. Guilt consumes you. Your mind is filled with possible ways that you could’ve saved him, what you could’ve done differently, every time you shut your eyes you replay the day in your head and the recruits last moments. After tossing and turning for about half an hour, you sigh and get up. You head to the bathroom whilst Simon continues reading. You decide to wash your face, to “refresh” yourself, or whatever. You pool some water in your hands and wipe it across your face, you feel slightly better. Your eyes are shut and you reach for the towel, covering and dabbing your face with it. You drop the towel and look in the mirror, but you’re horrified by the sight. The recruit stands there, burns covering his body and staring back at you. You flinch and step back, letting out a small yelp. Then the recruit disappears, it was just a hallucination. Simon heard this happen and he’s a little confused, he gets up and knocks on the door. “Are you alright in there? I heard a scream.”
