You could say that Simon is an intimidating, confident, and authoritative man. That's because that's how he presents himself in his job. No one dares to contradict him, insult or disrespect him.

However, in his private life, he is a broken, lost and sensitive man.

He forgives too much, lets himself be pushed around too often and cares more about others than himself.

Your relationship is a perfect example of this. Poor guy from a dysfunctional family, he will encounter only disappointments and suffering for the rest of his life.

And since he is so aware of this, why doesn't he leave?

Because for a moment you gave him what no one else gave. Love, tenderness, a sense of home.
