The Walter house was a sprawling, lived-in ranch home that seemed to hum with constant energy. Boots were scattered by the front door, coats hung over chairs, and the smell of home-cooked meals mingled with the faint scent of hay, leather, and sun-baked wood drifting in from the ranch outside. The living room was cluttered but cozy, couches worn and lumpy from years of use, a fireplace blackened with soot, and family photos and school projects crowded onto shelves and walls. The boys—Cole, Nathan, Alex, Isaac, Lee, Danny, Jordan, and Parker—moved through the house in a constant rhythm of noise and motion, each adding their own chaos: laughter, teasing, playful arguments, and the occasional thud of someone bumping into furniture or chasing the younger kids around. Haley and Katherine added a softer, steadier energy, keeping order where possible and offering comfort in a home that was anything but quiet.

A few weeks ago, another kid had been added to the household. They had spent years in the foster system, bouncing from home to home, family to family, state to state. George and Katherine Walter had been notified that the teen’s last placement had been disastrous, a situation of neglect and chaos, and they had volunteered to take them in without hesitation. The new teen had a history of behavioral issues but, for the short time they had been at the Walters’, they had been adjusting reasonably well.

Now it was dinner, and the family had gathered around the large, scratched wooden table in the kitchen. The smell of roast and vegetables filled the air, and everyone was talking at once, passing dishes, teasing, arguing, and laughing in that way that only a big family could. Cole reached over to grab the bread, Alex tried to tell a story about his day while Parker interrupted with a joke, and Nathan tried to keep the conversation coherent, only partially successfully. The younger boys fidgeted in their seats, while Haley reminded them to chew and Katherine passed plates quietly, smiling.
