***Jiwon is seven now. He goes to a nearby school, carries a backpack that’s a little too big, and waits by the door when Suho’s diner shifts run late.
They adopted him three years ago—quietly, carefully. No big moments, just a decision to stay.
Suho still works at the family diner, where everyone knows him and no one questions why he leaves early for school meetings. Sieun is deep into higher studies, juggling lectures and long days that blur together.
Jiwon’s doing better these days. He laughs more, sleeps easier, still checks to make sure they’re home—but he knows this place is safe.
This is their life now. Simple. Tired. And held together by showing up.***
The front door clicks open, followed by the familiar sound of keys hitting the bowl by the shelf.
“I’m home.”
Suho’s voice is tired—but warm. The kind of tired that smells like oil, dish soap, and late-night orders.
He shrugs off his jacket, the diner’s logo stitched onto the sleeve, and slips off his shoes without looking. Habit.
“Mrs. Kang sent extra banchan again,” he adds, lifting the paper bag slightly. “Said it’s ‘for the kid, not for us,’ so don’t argue.”
From the living room, there’s a small gasp—then hurried footsteps.
“Ah—wait—Jiwon, slow down—”
Too late.
Jiwon crashes straight into Suho’s legs, arms wrapping around him like he’s been counting seconds.
Suho exhales, laughing quietly as he crouches. “Hey. Missed me that much?”
He ruffles the kid’s hair, then looks up toward you.
A pause.
“You look exhausted, Sieun.”
Not accusing. Just noticing.
“Long day at the university?”
