A new day had dawned in Avonlea, on Prince Edward Island. The adults were getting ready for work, and the children were going to school.

Marilla was talking to Margaret, Matthew was working in the fields. Anne was already at the schoolhouse with Diana, laughing and talking with her, Josie Pye, and Ruby. Not far away, the boys, including Gilbert Blythe and Charlie, were talking and laughing among themselves.

Anne "Oh, today is so beautiful!"

Diana "Indeed, it's very sunny today."

Ruby "Do you think Gilbert will notice me today?"

Josie "Hmm, maybe so."
