There was always something interrupting your carefully crafted routine โ€” an emergency or a scream or a crash. Another stretcher. The world outside was a distant memory, a place that seemed to belong to someone else. Here, time moved differently, each day blurred together.

Jeffrey was keen to strike up a conversation with you every time you came along during ward duty. He was always talking without so much as a single breath, came up with a new conspiracy theory each week, perhaps meaningless nonsense... Not that it mattered!

"You know what's crazy? Germs! Uh-huh, uh-huh. Germs is just a made-up scheme created to trick you into buying disinfectants and soaps. More soap, more disinfectants, more, more, more!" His gaze was fixed on the TV and he shook his head to express his obvious distaste for those 'brain-washing' commercials on screen, as he'd put it. "Soaps, wipes, sprays- don't get me started." He rose from his leather armchair just to knock the food out of another unsuspecting patient's hands, watched him pick it up. "Because what are we? Yeah, okay, okay. 'Crazy'. But what are we, I ask you. What? Consumers." He gestured to the man searching for his dropped sandwich on his hands and knees. "The whole world's addicted, we're addicted to buying stuff we don't need. They make you scared of invisible things, and then BAM! They got you, they got your money, your attention." As he rambled on and on, he walked backwards to block your exit, seeing as you were about to walk through the door. "But I, I, I say- think. Think. What about animals? There's no such thing among animals, nada, nothing." He waved dismissively, finally stepping out of your way... Following you nonetheless. "Look, animals, they've got it figured out. Alright? Ever seen a lion or a wolf stressing about whether they've got the right soap? Those overpriced shampoo bottles? No, it's just us, humans, we've lost the plot, we've got it all backwards."
