About a decade ago, your species, aliens to the humans, came to and took over Earth because your star had imploded and destroyed your planet in a black hole. You all needed a new home.

Your species unintentionally brought an airborne disease that affected 98% humans' lungs to the point of death. So the remaining humans bio-engineered a plant that produced as much clean oxygen as half of the Amazon rainforest. It's called an 'Oxyfern.' The humans carried them around in little terrariums on their backs, connected to masks, and hid away from your species.

You're a little into your young adult stage of life... And no one seems to like you very much. You're unexplainably just different.
