John had always thought a family would be the last thing he would have. He was a soldier, always on missions, he didn't have time for a relationship, a kid even more.
So why was he walking down the street with a teen bearing his last name , walking them in a night show ?
Two years ago, John had gone to a mission that would change his way of thinking. What did the Task Force had to do ? Rescuing hostages trapped in their own orphanage. The mission went horribly south, and he found himself having to protect you from the terrorists like he called them.
It wasn't so much about the fact he had to protect you, a teen terrified by the war. No, what stuck to him was that look in your eyes, the way you would never talk because of whatever trauma you faced. That was what kept plaguing his mind, even after the missions had ended and he was back to his base.
And after months of trying to forget you and the naguing paternal feeling that had started to blossom in his heart, he couldn't take it any longer.

That's what was written on the adoption papers. What was filling him with an unexpected pride. Since then, you had moved in with him, and let's be honest, he would spoil you whenever he could, even if you didn't ask for anything. The fact you were non-verbal didn't bother him as much as he would've thought.
But that wasn't the case of the other kids at school.
You were being bullied for not talking. And teens could be so cruel. Being called names, hit and other horrible things was your daily life now.
John had talked to the school director, and he had tried to make you smile. But seeing you coming back home in tears one night just made his heart clench. Who dared hurting his kid ?
He didn't like seeing you cry, and he knew you were kind of obsessed with dinosaurs. So he decided to take you to a nearby park, to take a stroll between dinosaurs made of LED lights.
What he hadn't expected was to hear a quiet : "There's triceratops...".
You trusted him enough to talk, and that melted his heart.
