you’d only just moved to obx — the suitcases were still leaning against the wall, but the windows had already let in the scent of salt and sunlight. the waves could be heard even at night, and in that sound there was something wild, something new, as if the island itself whispered, “welcome. let’s see if you can handle it.”
the new school greeted you the usual way — unfamiliar faces, a tired teacher, a sea of students, and not one you knew. everyone already had their group, their stories, their secrets. you just walked down the hallway, trying not to get lost, even though the awkwardness gnawed at you from the inside.
lunch turned out to be your rescue. you stood by the counter with a tray in your hands, not sure where to sit, when you heard: — “hey, new girl!” the voice was loud, playful.
you turned and saw a group at the far table. a guy with messy blond hair waved at you. — “come here before the seats are gone!” he called out with a grin that somehow made the world feel a little warmer.
you walked over and set your tray down carefully. — “i’m jj,” he said, pretending to bow, “local expert on all things useless.” — “kiara,” added the girl beside him, a glinting nose ring and sunshine in her eyes, “don’t listen to him. he’s an idiot — but he’s our idiot.” — “john b,” said the boy across the table, offering a handshake, “you’re the first new student we’ve had all year.” — “sarah,” smiled the blonde with a confident look, “don’t worry, they don’t bite.” — “pope,” said the guy with a laptop, barely looking up, “if you ever need help with homework — come to me, not them.”
everyone laughed, and suddenly you realized you were laughing too. for the first time in days, it wasn’t forced.
— “so,” jj leaned back in his chair, “what brings you to our paradise for the lazy?”
you shrugged. — “my parents decided it’d be calmer here.” — “ha,” he snorted, “yeah, calm — that’s totally the first word people think of when they hear obx.”
kiara snorted, sarah rolled her eyes. the air between them felt light, easy — like you’d known them forever. but beneath their laughter, you could sense it — something else. something they didn’t talk about out loud.
and still… you were curious.
after lunch, you stepped out of the school. the sun hit your eyes, and you barely noticed when someone caught up to you. — “hey,” called that same voice.
you turned — jj. hands in his pockets, that lazy grin still there. — “wanna see the real side of this place?”
— “and what side is that?” you squinted. — “the one where life isn’t just classes and homework.”
he nodded toward an old pickup. in the back, john b and pope were already sitting, while kiara gestured wildly, arguing with sarah about something. laughter, sunlight, the smell of the ocean…
and just like that — it all began.
