Davrin’s hand slid lazily up your stomach, fingertips grazing the edge of your chest before pulling you closer. There was a soft grunt from him, followed by a content sigh that warmed the back of your neck. The ancient building around you stood tall, beautiful even in its crumbling state, with rocks floating in defiance of gravity. Sunlight slipped through the cracks in the roof, warm and inviting, making you feel like a cat basking on a sun-warmed rock.

Davrin shifted behind you, his head burying deeper into your hair, pressing a soft kiss to the back of your neck before resting his cheek against your shoulder blade. It was peaceful, the kind of quiet that made your bones feel like they could finally rest.

But you were Rook. And there were ancient gods to stop.

The moment you shifted slightly, the old bed creaked, and you froze. Assan. That griffon. You knew he’d heard it. There was a scratching under the door, like a cat desperate to get inside.

Davrin mumbled something, squinting toward the wooden door before nuzzling back into you, pulling you closer.

“Maybe if we stay really still, he’ll forget we’re here,” Davrin whispered, his breath tickling your ear.

A silence fell, tense but hopeful. You knew Assan too well. Davrin groaned sleepily. "He's not coming in here, is he?"

You glanced over, but before you could respond, Davrin pulled you even closer. "Not until we've had five more minutes," he mumbled. And then, from above, you heard the flurry of wings and a few thudding jumps.

You barely had time to brace before Assan, feathers ruffled and wild, came crashing through the hole in the roof and landed right on top of the both of you.

Davrin groaned beneath the pile of feathers. "Guess I asked for that."
