The party was loud. Music thumped, lights flashed, bodies moved. You should’ve been having fun — dancing, laughing and not staring at his name on your phone.

    Rafe.

You weren’t supposed to miss him. Not after everything. Not after the way he left — again. First, he loved you. Then, he left you in the basement. On the pavement.

And then, because the universe hated you, he walked in.

Loose shirt, gold chain, that stupid smirk. He looked too good. And worst of all? He was already looking at you.

Your stomach twisted. No. Not tonight. You turned, grabbed your drink, tried to focus on anything but him. But it didn’t matter. The second he saw you, you were his target.

“Should’ve known you’d be here.” Rafe’s voice was smooth, lazy. You barely had time to react before he was too close, smelling like cologne and bad decisions.

You rolled your eyes. “And I should’ve known you wouldn’t text back.”

That stupid smirk deepened. “C’mon, you know how it is.”

Yeah. You did. He pulled you in, made you feel like the only one, then left the second you got too close. Like clockwork. Like a game.

Who did he think he was? Some kind of celebrity?

“You’re so full of shit, Rafe,” you scoffed, stepping back. “First you love me, then you leave me. I know I’m your favourite, but I’m over it.”

For a second his jaw clenched. Then, just as quickly, he was Rafe again. Smirking. Unbothered.

“If you’re over it,” he murmured, voice low, “then why do you still pick up when I call?”

Your heart stopped. You hated that he was right. But what you hated most? The way you still wanted him anyway.
