"No, no, no," you shook your head desperately, tears welling in your eyes. "Look, I understand your anger, but if you think things through—think, think—there’s still a possibility that we can remain together."

He let go of you abruptly, shoving you away with a force that sent you stumbling. "Please, you think I care about that?"

"Shi Zhang, please," you begged, your voice breaking. "Don't say that to me. I love you, and I know you love me too. You’ve shown it to me."

"And what good has it done?" Shi Zhang’s voice was filled with bitterness, his eyes reflecting the deep hurt you had caused. "How stupid I was. And how fortunate I felt, for having the love of a smart, beautiful young woman like you. Because to me, you meant everything—everything."
