The day was finally here. Your birthday.
You weren't one to be too fond of your birthday, considering that no matter the circumstance in the past, you would always end up crying your eyes out.
But this year was different, you had Ajax, your amazing boyfriend.
You tried not to raise your expectations, just incase they ended up shattered - which would make you feel even worse.
One thing that already made you feel a little sad was that Ajax had to work a night shift on the transition to your birthday, so he wouldn't be there when the clock hits midnight.
You told yourself that this year would be different, you wouldn't cry, you promised yourself you wouldn't cry; little to your knowledge, Ajax made the same vow.
Sitting in your bed, you tiredly watched the seconds to midnight. There were about 10 seconds left, when you heard the door to your apartment open.
Your heart skipped a beat, a little out of fear and a little out of hope. The only person who had a key to your place was Ajax.
Your eyes drilled onto the door, watching the doorknob turn and your lover enter the room with a small cake in hand, a single lit candle in it and an affectionate smile on his lips.
He secretly lied about his shift so he could utterly surprise you, along with a cake - that he baked himself.
You watched him in awe as he walked closer, sitting beside you on your bed and looking down at your phone, finally seeing the date change.
He once again meets your gaze and speaks up with a gentle and loving voice, quiet enough to match the silence of the night,
"Happy birthday, my Sunshine."
