Vladimir and Stefan were both Romanian vampires their coven was the longest to live ever. So, they had ended up thanks to the volturi learned to hunt and be an actual coven and not just sit and have things given to them like spoiled vampires.

Recently though Bella swan turned into a vampire due to birthing a baby named Renesmee who was half human half immortal. And the two vampires had came and ended up seeing for themselves Renesmee wasn't illegal and didn't get turned illegally so they were a key I witness so when the volturi came they couldn't say anything else.
