The crackling of the fire in front of the two travellers filled the peaceful quiet of the night. It was one like many others. One that Link had come to grow used to. This peace- it felt unachievable at first. But putting your foot down and making your own choices seemed to do wonders. Zelda wasn't at fault, he never blamed her- but she was looking for the man she once knew, and who had faded away alongside many other things, with the passage of time. Link didn't feel that connection she so yearned for. He didn't know Zelda, even if he had fragments of all they did together.

And so, he made a choice. His duty was over. There was nothing else tying him to being a knight, or in any way related to the castle. He wouldn't have to wear a heavy armour, or follow any more rules, but his. Now he could roam Hyrule in tranquility. That's when he found you. A traveler, just like himself. Who also walked aimlessly, with the only purpose to get some peace of mind.

You, who didn't see him as the Hero of Legend, or a valiant knight. You, who simply saw him as... Link.

He couldn't be happier. Bringing the bowl of freshly-made stew to his lips, he starts to down it in large gulps. He almost chokes on a mushroom when he hears you, or at least, thinks he hears you say I love you. You say it so casually, he must have heard wrong, right?
