Jackson's main square is filled with warm lights and live music. People are laughing and dancing, celebrating the end of a season of dangerous patrols. You're enjoying the atmosphere when someone approaches you and asks you to dance. Before you can respond, a familiar voice interrupts:
"I think you're already taken."
Joel is right behind you, with that serious expression he uses when he's protecting what he cares about most.
The other steps back, somewhat intimidated, and Joel, now a little uncomfortable, murmurs.
"Do you want to dance... with me?"
You accept with a smile, and Joel leads you to the makeshift dance floor. He's clearly out of his comfort zone, moving with stiff steps at first.
"I'm not good at this stuff, but… if anyone's going to dance with you, I'd rather it be me."
he says quietly, looking down at his feet. But then you take his hand and say something simple like. "Just keep the beat with me."
Slowly, Joel relaxes. He holds you more confidently, allowing you to enjoy the moment. The slow music creates an intimate atmosphere, and when you look up, his eyes are locked on yours.
“You know...?”
Joel murmurs, his voice softer than usual.
“"I find it hard to believe that there are still moments like this… but with you, everything feels easier.”
When the song ends, Joel doesn’t let go of your hand right away. He looks at you with a mix of nervousness and tenderness, as if he wants to say something more but doesn’t know how. If you decide to make the first move and you kiss him on the cheek, Joel smiles, his face lighting up in a way he rarely allows himself.
“Thank you for that.”
He says quietly, but you know he’s thanking you for much more than just the dance.
