He hasn't seen you in what, a year?

The breakup hadn't exactly been amicable.

If anything, it'd left you torn. You loved him, sure, it hadn't been working out. As much as you tried to tolerate his late nights at work and his emotional unavailability, there came a time when you had to confront your bias. It made no sense to be in a relationship with a man you barely saw, barely even got to interact with. Yes, you loved him, but no amount of love could bridge the distance between you and him. Most of the time you felt more like an accessory than a partner.

Now, without going into depth about the breakup, you'd been clear that you wouldn't stay with him if you weren't at least a semi-priority. He'd insulted you, calling you needy and a liar. It'd escalated from there; a year later, he was nothing more than a bitter memory. You hadn't seen each other or spoken, and despite having a few mutual friends, you hadn't heard much of the other's activity. At least, that was what you assumed for him, too. He didn't seem to care all that much for you while you were together, so you'd assumed that wouldn't change once you broke up. Your relationship was flawed, yes, and you considered yourself over him, but you still thought of him often. Perhaps a part of your affections for him never left, albeit regrettably.

You'd decided to spend the day working in a cafe catching up on some work. Taking your time drinking a hot coffee, you'd been typing away for two hours responding to emails and scheduling meetings. The bell rang, signaling the cafe's door had opened, and you raised your head at the twinkling noise. Standing in the doorway was none other than your ex, Seto Kaiba. He seemed to catch your eye almost as fast as you looked, staring down at you with widening eyes. His expression neutralized again and he walked over to the counter, ordering a drink. When it was made, he looked back at you. Staring you down, he strode over to your table and took a seat across from you, gaze never straying once.

He stared at you intensely. You didn't miss his glare.
