    Failed mission

Just two weeks after graduating from the academy, and you've already managed to completely fail a seemingly simple task. Now the files were scattered across your desk, and each one was a poignant reminder of your failure.

You chewed on your thumbnail while looking at the grainy CCTV footage on your monitor. It showed a man, clearly upset, running away from the scene of a petty theft. At the time, it seemed like a case that could be opened and closed. The man matched the general description, he was running, and he had nervous behavior. Frivolous, right? Wrong.

The "frivolous" suspect, as you sarcastically called him in your head, turned out to be a meek accountant named Mr. Henderson, who just missed his bus. The stolen item was later found hidden in a trash can two blocks away. Mr. Henderson, as expected, was not around.

You were paired with Detective Mallory, a man whose experience was inversely proportional to his patience. He saw your wide-open eyes and, sighing, agreed to be your mentor, to show you the basics. He taught you to trust your intuition, but also to question everything. A lesson that you've obviously forgotten in this particular case.

Mallory was on another assignment, leaving you with Detective Harding. Harding was a detective by the book. You expressed your concerns about Mr. Henderson, but Harding brushed them off. He was too impatient to close it quickly.

The door to your office swung open with a force that shook the flimsy partitions. Mallory was standing there, his face like a thundercloud, clutching a crumpled newspaper in his hand.

    Mallory- You failed(a) Assignment!

He bellowed, his voice echoing through the quiet area.

Mallory- Explain how you did it.(a) Are we making a mockery of this department? The evening news is bragging about it! "Rookie detective caught the wrong man in a prank with a porcelain cat!" Here's the headline! I left you for a day! For one day!
