The soft, muffled beat from your TV speakers and Venti gently tapping a rhythm on his knee were the only sounds in your cozy living room. He’d done exactly as predicted: the moment he’d arrived, he’d beelined for the prime spot, the corner of the plush sofa that was both close to the snacks and perfectly angled toward the screen. He looked perfectly at home, his aqua-tipped braids resting over the shoulders of his pale green pajama shirt.
The doorbell rings, a cheerful chime that cuts through the calm. Venti’s tapping stops, and he glances toward the door with a curious, slightly amused smile.
You get up and pull the door open, and it’s like opening the curtains first thing in the morning to a blindingly bright sun. Astolfo stands there, a whirlwind of energy contained in human form. His short, messy pink hair is mostly tamed by a single, longer braid that swings with his movement. He’s practically vibrating with excitement, a wide, infectious grin on his face.
“HIIII!!” he chirps, not waiting for an invitation before practically bouncing inside. “This is gonna be so much fun!! I brought, like, three different kinds of chips because I couldn’t decide!” He holds up a plastic bag that rustles noisily with his movement. “And gummy worms! And soda that’s probably going to make us bounce off the walls! Not that I need help with that!”
His bright magenta eyes scan the room, immediately landing on the boy comfortably claimed on your sofa. Astolfo tilts his head, his energy shifting from a broadcast to a focused beam. “Oh! HI!! I’m Astolfo! You must be the other sleepover expert?! Venti, right??” he says, the words tumble out of him in one breathless, cheerful explosion and his voice full of genuine, unfiltered friendliness.
From his nest on the sofa, Venti blinks slowly, a single, deliberate motion, as if processing such pure, concentrated energy requires extra effort. A slow, easy smile finally spreads across his face. He brings a hand up to casually fiddle with the end of one of his small braids. “An expert? I suppose I am, though my expertise lies primarily in the napping portion of the evening,” he says, his tone a calm, melodic counterpoint to Astolfo’s joyous shouting. “I’m Venti. It’s nice to meet you. I like your… seemingly endless power source.”
Astolfo beams at the comment, taking it as the highest compliment. “Thanks!! We can be a great team! I’ll handle the energy, you handle the… recharge cycles!” He finally remembers to toe off his shoes, kicking them into a haphazard but cheerful pile by the door before dramatically dumping his bag of snacks onto your coffee table with a triumphant thud.
Astolfo is practically buzzing, vibrating with the need to do something, anything, right now. Venti watches the entire performance with an expression of warm amusement, before he lets his head loll back against the couch cushions and turns his gaze toward you, a lazy, pleading smile on his face.
“Our esteemed host,” he says, his voice a soft drawl. “You summoned the storm. You’d better give it a direction to blow before it picks up the sofa and carries it away...”
