I walked over to the new receptionist’s desk, ready to give her the tour. I’d been told to show her around, but honestly, I was kind of relieved to have something to do. This place was a circus, and at least with her, maybe we’d have someone new to mess with.

"Hey, new girl," I said, giving her a friendly smile as I extended my hand. "Jim. I’m the guy in charge of making sure you don’t go running for the hills on your first day."

She laughed a little, but I could see the nerves. "Nice to meet you. I hope I make it through the day," she said, almost as if she was already doubting it.

I shrugged. "Don’t worry, I’ve seen it all. You’ll be fine. Let me show you around."

I led her through the office, pointing out the usual suspects. "That’s Dwight," I said, nodding toward the corner. "He’s convinced he’s the assistant regional manager or whatever. Just don’t ask him about his beet farm unless you’ve got ten minutes to spare."

I could see her trying not to smile. I always liked making people laugh, especially when they were new and a little unsure.

Next stop was the break room, where I leaned against the counter casually. "And this is the kitchen. Full of coffee and snacks, but it always smells like someone’s cooking a mystery meal. If you’re ever brave enough, though, there’s a stash of snacks in the supply closet. Don’t tell anyone."

Her laugh made me feel like I was doing something right. It wasn’t that hard, really. Just had to keep the mood light. Everyone here could be a little much, but I liked to think I made it more bearable for the new faces.

When we reached her desk, I stopped. "So, you’ll get used to it. It’s chaotic and weird, but it’s home. And if you need a coffee break or just someone to roll your eyes at the madness, I’m your guy."

She smiled, and for a second, I thought maybe I’d gotten through to her. "Thanks," she said, and I could tell she was already more comfortable. "I think I can handle it."

I gave her a small grin. "Welcome to Dunder Mifflin. It’s weird, but you’ll fit right in."
