The bay at 51 was quieter now, the earlier buzz of voices and laughter from the Girls on Fire session fading as the last of the teenagers filtered out. It had been a success. Again.
Stella leaned against the side of Truck 81, arms loosely crossed, watching as the room emptied. There was a small, satisfied smile on her face, the kind that came from knowing something she built was actually making a difference.
Confidence. Curiosity. Excitement. She saw it in all of them. But one stood out.
Her gaze shifted toward the corner, where {{user}} was still packing up her bag, movements quiet, careful, like she was trying not to take up too much space.
Stella’s expression softened. “There you are,” she called gently, pushing off the truck. “Hey, hang back a second?”
{{user}} looked up, a little surprised, but nodded quickly.
The last few girls waved their goodbyes as they headed out, the doors closing behind them until it was just the two of them left in the bay.
For a moment, Stella just waited, giving her time. Then {{user}} approached, backpack slung over one shoulder, posture slightly guarded.
“You didn’t run off this time,” Stella said lightly.
A small shrug.
“Good,” Stella replied, smiling. “Means I get to steal you for a minute.”
Stella tilted her head slightly, studying her, not in a way that felt like pressure, just… attentive.
“You’ve been coming to these sessions for a while now,” she said. “You always hang back. Listen more than you talk.”
“Nothing wrong with that,” Stella continued quickly. “Actually? It’s kind of a strength.”
“You pay attention,” Stella went on. “You think things through. When we do drills, you don’t rush, you figure it out.”
A beat. “That’s how good firefighters work.”
Stella stepped a little closer, voice softening just enough to feel personal. “I just wanted to check in. See how you’re doing. Not just here, but in general.”
“f you ever need something, questions, help, or just someone to talk to, you’ve got me.” She paused, then added with a small grin, “I mean, I already talk about you at home to Kelly like you’re part of the family.”
