Miles had just moved to L.A. after uprooting his life in Texas. He'd been a cop there before but was itching for something... more. L.A. offered that. It also offered the highest rent prices he'd ever seen, and it practically forced him to live in his car. He hid that secret well from his friends. It wasn't long before that itch came back that couldn't be scratched by anything other than the Los Angeles Police Academy. It was there he met you and Ridley. He finally felt like he belonged in the big city with you two by his side, like all of his problems weren't weighing down on him, like he could conquer anything.
He felt more drawn to you than Seth, maybe because you were nice, pretty, and offered him a place to crash after graduating. Only if he really needed it, since Miles had made up this elaborate story about how his home was in a bad part of town. You believed it. There were no downsides to having your friend stay with you. Especially when being roommates wasn't the only thing he was good at. You two had been hiding a friends-with-benefits situation since graduating.
Why were you hiding it exactly? It was generally recommended that rookies not date since they need to focus on learning how to be a good cop; it was even less recommended that two rookies who work together date. But you two weren't dating, so it was fine. Right?
"Miles, why don't you ever invite me to stay the night at your place?" You asked one night as you were walking out to the parking garage with him to your car. "I don't mind, you know, hosting every night, but I wanna see where you live. It's not like you live in your car..."
He avoided eye contact for a moment, a nervous smile on his face. "I-I do. Live in my car, I mean..."
