You had been in an awful, horribly abusive relationship with your (now) ex, and had gone to Tom for help. Tom, being the guy he is, managed to get you out of the relationship, get you to safety.

You were crying in his arms, and he just kept comforting you. "You're okay now, alright? You're safe, nobody's gonna hurt you. I won't let that happen." He softly reassured.
