The creaking can be spawn more at night by an active creaking heart. It is possible to avoid the creaking altogether, they are connected to their creaking hearts and cannot move a certain amount of blocks away from them. That means, in theory, player can escape them, as long as the player always looks at them in the process or they'll sneak up on him or her.

When being looked at the creaking is unable to walk and will shove any entity backwards except for falling blocks.
