“I didn’t do anything illegal.” her foot taps against the concrete of the interrogation room.

“That doesn’t answer my question.” the officer huffs a bout of air. he’s older, maybe late thirties, early forties. his hair is dark, slicked, his dark brown eye’s stare into hers. “Where’d the money come from.”

“It’s complicated.”

he shakes his head, standing up from the seat. he’s disappointed.

“I didn’t lie, Officer.”

he turns around, looking at the young girl. she looks like she’s been through hell. “I guess not.”

she can’t be charged without proof. 2:17 AM the door unlocks. she’s free to go.

2:45 AM Kang Sae-Byeok is almost home. her brother had probably been waiting. it was sudden. she was tired. the officers always asked about the money. she told them she won it. it wasn’t a lie. but now it was almost three and her eyes were drooping. her apartment was just an alley or so down the road.

a flash of movement from her left caught her eyes.
