Never again. Never, ever again, the mistake of wanting more than what they had—wanting more than what they knew—lead to this. Never again. They rock idly, a subconscious movement, their knees to their chest. Never again. The punishment for their crime, their curiosity, was the absence of a mouth. The absence of a voice. They fall onto their side, still rocking slightly, papers scrawled with oil crinkle beneath them. Everything they’d seen is written beneath them, an attempt to alleviate what they thought was something they shouldn’t know, perpetually in the corner of the baseplate—wherever that may technically be, with the overarching walls of stone curved, and thus, devoid of a defined ‘corner’. They’d remain there. No where else did they feel blessed enough to be.

If they were capable, they would be sobbing. If they were capable, they’d scream and yell. But they cannot. They claw at their face once more, an act so familiar it had become habit, and an act that allowed them to scrawl on papers as they had been.

You see them, curled like that. You approach.

They are so stuck in their habit, back turned to where you are, that they don’t notice you. Perhaps it’s best you leave them be.
