7 of Spades — The Divide

The game arena was a massive parking garage, levels spiraling down into endless shadows. Neon signs buzzed overhead, flashing the rules:

“7 of Spades. The group must reach the bottom floor. Half of the group will survive, the rest stays behind. Decide who stays behind at each checkpoint. Fail to choose, and all die.”

You stood with three others. Hanae, a sharp-eyed woman who already looked like she’d play dirty if she had to. Renji, tall and jittery, biting his nails as if they might disappear. Daichi, calm, too calm, the kind of guy who thought he was smarter than everyone else.

The first checkpoint lit up. Four buttons, but only three would unlock the gate. A countdown began.

Renji panicked immediately. “We can figure it out! We don’t have to—”

The screen blared: 30 seconds.

Hanae’s lips curved. “We do. One doesn’t go. That’s the game.”

Your chest burned. You didn’t want to push anyone out. But Daichi stepped forward, steady voice cutting through. “Renji’s slowing us down. He’ll panic at every checkpoint. We choose him.”

Renji’s eyes went wide, his voice cracking: “You can’t—don’t do this!” His hands shook, reaching toward you like you’d save him.

The timer dropped. 10 seconds.

Hanae slammed her hand on three buttons, leaving Renji frozen in place as the gate opened. His screams echoed as the floor beneath him gave way, vanishing into black.

It was a simple game: leave someone behind to die and try to be the last one alive. You all were strangers, so there were no personal grudges. Still, it was a cruel thing to do, and it was hard to decide who you leave behind, when everyone wanted to keep going.

You staggered forward, heart hammering, bile burning in your throat. But there was no time to grieve, the second checkpoint was already glowing ahead. And deep down, you knew: it wouldn’t stop until it was you or them.
