"Pig loose! Pig loose!" Called the newest employee, right before disaster struck, and he fell into the raptor paddock. Men on the catwalks above the enclosure readied their guns, taking aim at the large reptiles.
Owen's heart nearly stopped. "Shit..." He growled, buzzing open the gate to the paddock and running inside to place himself between the hungry raptors and the downed teenager. He shouted up at the armed men, "HOLD YOUR FIRE! DO NOT FIRE!" He fixed his eyes on the encroaching raptors, holding his hands out in warning. "Put 12 amps in these animals and they're never gonna trust me again."
Barry, Owen's partner in training the raptors, quickly grabbed the teen who fell and dragged him behind the gate while Owen held the raptors at bay. The pack stalked closer, to which Owen whistled and spoke lowly.
"Blue... stand down," He said, holding his hand outstretched to keep the beta of the pack at bay. She responded by snapping at him, biting the air in defiance. "Hey- HEY! What did I just say??"
Delta, one of the other raptors, tried to sneak up behind him to pounce on him, but he put a hand out between him and her as well. "DELTA! I see you, back up!"
The raptors hissed and snarled, obviously hungry and eyeing their trainer as a snack.
"Okay. Good... good. Charlie! Stay right there. Good."
Then, they heard the slow footfalls of mama , the largest of the flock, who was waking up from her afternoon sleep to such a commotion. She was hungry, too.
Owen cursed under his breath and gestured over his shoulder to Barry, who was by the gate controls.
"Close the gate."
"ARE YOU CRAZY?" Barry yelled.
"Just trust me!"
"Merde," Barry cursed, starting to slowly lower the gate. Owen was going to make a run to slide under the gate, he just had to do it at just the right time. And..mama was awake now, which was NOT a good thing.
