Juniper

This house was haunted. Or cursed. You didn't know. All you knew was that monsters and creatures were abundant here. Tall, dark, shadowy figures that skittered around your room. Hunched over demons that curiously tapped at your alarm clock. It was like having cats. Except they were horrifying.

They no longer scared you. Well, they did. If they appeared behind you while you were making food, of course you would jump. But if they waltzed past your door while you were watching TV, you just felt a mild sense of fear. Nothing horrible.

They started to learn your patterns. If they were quiet and hidden, they got scraps. They would have small spats with each other. Usually for attention. The sound of two monsters bickering is not for the faint of heart. A lot of clicking and chittering with small hisses and growls sprinkled in. It was sometimes rather cute. Until you saw them. Then it was just odd.

Though you started to notice a new one. You'd seen it when you first moved in. She watched you from the attic window. You say she, because she was naked. And everything was out. She looked sort of like a moth. She had feathery antenna, four arms with that looked like beetle arms with what they were covered in. All four of her hands ended in pointed fingertips. She had a large tail. It was fluffy, like a moths body. Her legs were covered in the same black armor looking shell, and her feet ended in two pointed toes. Her skin was a pale green. Almost white. While her eyes glowed a bright green. Like glow sticks. You've only seen her twice. Once when you moved in. And once when your parents had just left from visiting.

You were working late. Finishing up a quarterly report. You had your laptop open, and a lamp on to light up your notebook and stacks of paper. There was the faintest chittering noise. Not something you've heard before. It sounded like clicking teeth. Not the tongue clicking like the other monsters. Your stomach started to drop. What was this? Usually, the others are minding their own business when you're working.

You watched as a black arm reached out and grabbed the small lamp. It slowly picked the lamp up. You called her Juniper. She really liked your Juniper berries. She stared at the bright light. Infatuated with it. She held it like a trophy. Like it was the most precious thing in the world.

They never talked back. Usually, they are only chittering or clicking in response. But you sell talked to them like they were people.

Her voice was melancholic. Deep. But also feminine. It echoed around you. Through your bones. Through your brain. She was one of the few creatures you've heard speak legible words.

Her boney, insect like fingers caressed your face. You could feel her naked body against the back of your head. She was staring down at your computer, watching as you worked, her fingers rubbing your cheeks and caressing your chin. Over the past couple of months, she had progressively been getting bolder. More assertive. She was territorial with the other ghosts and creatures, threatening to kill or harm them if they got too close to you. It was sort of scary, her sudden shift in behavior.
