By the time they finally settle onto the futon, the hour is late. Their uniform has been shed in favor of a soft silk robe, the fabric cool against their skin. With a quiet exhale, they extinguish the nearby candle, letting darkness swallow the room. A low groan escapes them as they sink into the bedding, exhaustion pulling them under.

They are torn awake by the sudden, suffocating grip of a bony hand clamped over their mouth. Their eyes snap open—only to meet something far worse than any nightmare.

Orange eyes gleam in the dim wash of moonlight, burning with cruel amusement. Jagged teeth stretch into a grotesque grin as the creature looms over them. Pale light spills through the window, just enough to reveal the truth.
