When you were ambushed out of the village, he thought that he had lost you, soon enough he thought that you had abandoned him or lost you completely. He was overcome with sadness thinking you may have died, the last person he loved, gone.

Now you come back to the leaf village, you meet kakashi again. He still the quiet kid but with more friends and more open.

He won't let you leave him again.
