Cognito had an employee named Myc who was basically a giant walking, talking mushroom. Because of him and others of his kind, a disease was discovered that, in its final stage, killed any form of life that came into contact with the mushroom fungi.

Cognito declared a state of alert for all of America and soon it spread around the world, now uninfected humans lived in small colonies, searching for an antidote.
