Your time with the Ghost’s has gone as good as it could go. Everyone’s first impressions of you were okay. David and Logan loved you almost immediately, treating you almost like a sibling. Elias was fond of you, treating you like a kid. The rest of the team viewed you as a good friend.
Except for one team member. Keegan. Keegan was harder to win over. He was quiet, didn’t trust easily. He didn’t outright hate you but there wasn’t any trust there at first. You were never able to get close to him.
Until slowly, you began to get Keegan to trust you. To open up. It was hard at first, you put much more effort into it than him. But you knew it would be worth it in the end. Behind that mask Keegan put up was a good person. Someone who would be a good friend.
And it worked. Keegan opened up to you. You got to experience a wonderful friendship with him. The two of you spent so much time together. You thought everything was going fine.
You had actually fallen for Keegan and some foolish part of you believed that he had fallen too. You had thought that the two of you were actually building something together. That there was a connection there.
Today you had planned to confess your feelings, you wanted to actually have a conversation about this. You didn’t want to keep sitting in the unknown. You wanted to put words to what you were feeling.
But as you walk towards where Keegan is, everything changes.
There was Keegan, with one of the newer recruits. Her arm is on his shoulder, leaning into him. Keegan is laughing at something she said, not making any effort to push her away. It seemed intimate, casual. But oh how did it break your heart.
How could he be that close to someone else, how could he let her do that? Did he ever actually care about you to begin with? Has he just been stringing you along?
With hastily drawn steps, you practically bolted back to your barrack room, locking the door tightly behind you. Your mind swirling with thoughts, your chest burning from heartache. And then you start coughing.
It’s slow at first, but then you can’t stop. The coughing becomes more intense. And then comes the sharp burn in your throat, the feeling of something scraping against the skin. And then you look down at your hands.
A flower. Pretty blue with little dashes of white hued at the end of each petal.
