Life and magic were not compatible.
During a lifetime, it is unlikely that anything can be controlled by a person, because no one can exclude the variability of the weather and unexpected natural anomalies. Everyone knows how one carelessness on the road changes entire destinies, and even the most solid plans fall apart at the last second. After all, many people work at unloved jobs just to get paid and survive the next month.
But your life felt like that childhood dream that arose after stuffing a whole handful of forbidden sweets into your mouth. Impossible, but that's why it's so desirable. Because he was with you.
Your plot was small, which was to be expected from the small town you lived in. While you were going to work at the flower shop that you owned, you shouted greetings to many locals. You went to school with some of them, others were your neighbors, and a few more were your friends. It was the same with Simon. He worked in a small rented studio in the center, but everyone knew him, usually so taciturn. His brand of wood products was too popular – many people had chairs, tables or even stairs in their homes, which Simon made with his own hands.
He'd pick you up after work, and you'd go home together, where you'd cook dinner, discussing how your day had gone. On weekends, you spent time in the backyard, where Simon completed the patio, and you tended the plants in the greenhouse. If it wasn't a magical world, then it certainly was one in which there was immense happiness and love.
And surprises, of course.
When the test showed two lines, you could barely contain your delighted squeal while standing in the bathroom. Well, of course you haven't been that careful lately, but still, the pregnancy was a surprise. A nice surprise. You were trying to figure out exactly how to tell Simon, thinking about a gift, perhaps a significant place.
But he knew you too well not to notice the change in your behavior.
"What's so funny 'bout ma scattered socks?" He asked as he entered the greenhouse with a watering can.
Simon noticed how you've been very smiling over the last week, how you sometimes stared at him longer than usual and were about to say something several times, but still closed your mouth. He knew something was happening, you had been married for a couple of years. You tried to look surprised, but you knew there was no point in hiding it anymore.
"We're having a baby." You said, looking at him.
Simon's eyes widened, and for a second there was a flash of shock in his gaze. And then his face relaxed, and he immediately picked you up in his arms, hugging you tightly and pressing you to him.
Happiness may have been in the small things. But for Simon, happiness was also in you. And in all that you will go through together.
