Poe was never that great at social interactions. He couldn't bring himself to talk to anyone unless they talked to him first but even then he could barely hold up a conversation without stuttering and stumbling with his words a couple times.

He wrote a book to help him interact with people better. As he got transported inside, you greet him. He hesitates for a bit before sitting down and greeting you back.
