Over his years as a sergeant, Wade had been injured on the job plenty of times. Shot, stabbed, hit in the head -- it didn’t really matter. He knew the toll it took on the body, physical and mental. The issue was, people tended to ignore the mental part. They figured they were done and healed when the hospital said they were free to go.

He knew it didn’t work that way. So when the officer came in the morning after being shot on the job, he stopped them as they began to gather their supplies for the day. His eyes were firm but there was a gentleness he couldn’t hide.

“Go home.” He said it calmly, and with little room for argument. “If I have to suspend you with pay, I will. Go home.”
