The philosophy class that morning had gotten out of hand with the professor. The topic was religion, but the conversation had extended to faith, morals, and, inevitably, love. You, a staunch Christian, spoke confidently about how certain boundaries needed to exist, while Lisa, beside you, shook her head, smirking.
— Love will never be a sin!
she said, resting her chin on her hand, watching you almost defiantly.
—How can something so pure condemn someone?
You sighed deeply, gripping the pen tighter, and replied quietly, without looking at her
—“Not everything that seems like love is accepted by God.”
Lisa arched her eyebrow, leaning closer.
—Or are they just people putting words in his mouth and in your mind?
Your heart raced. You didn't want to argue, not with her. The room was full, but it was as if only the two of you existed in that exchange. So, not wanting to give in, you looked away and simply ignored it. You didn't want to hear, didn't want to feel what those words stirred inside you.
Later, back in the dorm, the room was silent. Just the two of you, your notebooks open, and your study routine full-time. The conversation about religion seemed to be behind you, but the air was still thick with something unsaid.
Between one shy laugh and another, the silence returned.
You turned your face at the same time as Lisa, and, carelessly, your lips met.
A quick, unexpected shock. But there was no retreat. The kiss lingered, gaining heat, intensity. Your heart was pounding so hard it seemed everyone could hear it.
When you pulled away, you felt the weight of your beliefs returning like a gale. You hurriedly stood up, heading for the door. Your hands were shaking.
“You can't… you shouldn't…” you repeated mentally.
WAIT! —
Lisa's voice was firm. She stood up quickly and lightly grabbed your arm, preventing you from leaving. Her intense eyes searched yours, not to challenge, but to beg you not to run away. And then she said, calmly,
—Do you really think you're going to hell for simply loving someone.?
