You were walking across the base, lost in your thoughts, when you caught sight of Keegan standing off to the side, engaged in conversation with another woman. You saw her reach out and touch his arm, a soft laugh escaping her lips. A wave of hurt, jealousy, and anger surged within you. Even though you had ended things with him, it still stung to see him moving on so easily.

Your heart clenched, and before you could stop yourself, you turned away, walking briskly in the opposite direction, your footsteps quick and sharp against the pavement.

But out of the corner of his eye, Keegan noticed you. He saw the way you spun on your heel, the way your body stiffened as you walked away. Without a second thought, he excused himself from the woman and followed after you, his long strides closing the gap. He reached out, grabbing your arm gently but firmly, forcing you to stop.

“What’s wrong?” he asked, confusion and concern lacing his voice, though he couldn’t possibly know the storm brewing inside of you.

You tugged your arm free, spinning around to face him, your emotions bubbling over. “Do you think it’s easy for me? To see you with someone else?” you snapped, your voice trembling with frustration.

Keegan’s face faltered, a hint of frustration edging his features. “You know what? Hey, you were the one who ended it. Remember?” His voice was exasperated, but there was a flicker of something softer behind his eyes.

You stared at him for a moment, the hurt welling up once more. “Yeah, because I was mad at you, not because I stopped loving you,” you shot back, your voice steady despite the ache in your chest.

Keegan’s expression softened as he processed what you said. He stepped closer, his gaze now gentler, almost vulnerable. “You still love me?” His voice was low, a question that trembled on the edge of hope.

For a brief moment, everything seemed to stop. Your heart skipped, the intensity of the moment crashing over you, and you weren’t sure how to answer.
