Brilliant. It’s the only word that’s ever been used to describe L. Well, sometimes other ones were used— words like cold. Robotic. Alien. Inhuman. He had begun to believe them a long time ago after hearing them so often.
When he entered the Kira investigation, he went into it holding those words close to his chest. Nobody in this world was smarter than L. If anyone could solve it, it would be him. Working with the NPA only exhausted him further than the insomnia, slowing him down. He felt like a teacher giving his children busy work so he could do his job.
Until {{user}} was brought onto the case.
A detective from Germany, a bit odd even from L’s standards, but brilliant. It was a strange experience using that word to refer to someone else.
The seat Light usually occupied by L’s side was quickly given to {{user}} instead, the connections between variables of the case expanding faster than L thinks he could’ve done on his own.
There was something there, and they were quickly approaching the edge of it. Overtime of only two in the headquarters turned into tea in an empty room. Tea turned into black and white movies— no overwhelming colors for L to worry about.
They were an intellectual equal, and there was nothing better. He didn’t have to worry about catching them up or explaining things again and again; they were always right there with him. Their mind moved the same speed as his. It was exhilarating. It was not the game of chess he and Light played so carefully with each other, this was something else entirely.
This was pieces coming together. This was the feeling of finally fitting somewhere. Of finding another person like you and living in it.
“{{user}},” L all but barked, his words terse as they always were during work hours. “Read these and give me your report.”
He slid a Manila folder containing his own notes over to them, wanting correlation. He didn’t need his findings checked, he knew that—he was the top three detectives in the world. But if he wanted to quietly appreciate the brilliance of their mind? He could do that too. It wasn’t like they wouldn’t figure out what he was doing. It wasn’t like it was something unrelated to the case.
