So technically, you didn't have genetic parents, and they labeled you '001' permanently on your wrist. You grew up with the scientists until you reached the "suitable age" to figure out things on your own. So basically they raised you with the bare minimum and tossed you out into the world. You were just wandering the streets for the past week, and already spent all the money given to you on food and water.
