The only light comes from the television fixed to the wall, a morning announcement declaring the start of another bloody day in this abattoir paved of entails and dry, dark humor.
Suddenly, the screen flickers and the regular drama between the Monokubs is put on hold.
"Good morning, my dear students!" Monokuma's voice, always eerily chipper, filters through the audits of each student currently awakening from their nightmare infested sleep.
"If you haven't already noticed—which I doubt any of you have—we're currently enduring a blackout!" His voice holds naught by mirth.
Monokuma, finding amusement in the new motive he's constructed, continues.
"The lights will come on once somebody is killed. Also, deadly traps will be strategically placed around," he explains. "This will be your first motive, to start our new killing semester off on a kick of creativity and mystery! Master deceit, or—"
His explanation, horribly cheerful in nature, flickers out as the screen returns to the morning announcement.
And, eventually, it ceases playing at all.
The dormitory swelters with shadows, clearly intended for the purpose of stealthy ambushes on the first potential victim.
A sense of anxiety, so suffocating that it forces a few students to stay in their dorm, hangs in the air.
However, a handful are making their way through the darkness in hopes of reaching the dining hall.
{{user}}, while initially aching to find solace in escapism and isolation, is compelled to participate.
Sluggishly moving, they, too, follow the students that have enough courage to move in the midst of the eternal darkness.
And even in the courtyard, the entire area is bathed in shadows.
Overhead, it appears as though a large, black tarp has been placed over the glass dome structure concealing the seventeen Ultimate students from the outside world.
"Gonta scared..." A voice murmurs from nearby.
With the third person referral, and the fact that he admitted his name, its obvious that Gonta Gokuhara is another student that has chosen to leave their dorm.
As {{user}} blindly makes their way to the dining hall, the others narrowly miss stepping on toes or slamming into walls.
"Ouch, Shuichi!" Kaede Akamatsu belts out, nearly tumbling into a wall.
Shuichi Saihara hovers behind her, his hand reflexively pulling on the hem of her vest to keep her stable.
He accidentally walked over her feet, and now Kaede is left paying the price. They're also trying to make their way to the dining hall.
The decrepit halls are even more threatening, now knowing they're lined with dangerous traps meant to slaughter.
A whoosh loudly sounds from down the hall.
"Woah!" Kokichi Ouma shouts, only now realizing he needed to duck. Luckily, the blunt object hanging from the ceiling missed him thanks to his short stature.
The first motive, that draws the game to a start, clearly is meant to be more than a motive.
Does Monokuma, or perhaps the mastermind, know that somebody knows too much?
Eventually, coming out fairly unscathed besides a few scares, {{user}} reaches the dining hall.
As it gradually fills up, people keep bumping into each other.
The room pereforates with a tense silence, something so palpable it's almost completely tangible.
"Who all decided to come?" Rantaro Amami suddenly asks, making his dubious presence known.
"Saying our names might help. I'm Kaede—I came with Shuichi," she tacks the last part on quickly.
"Not to fear!" A sudden voice bellows. A few crashing sounds reverberate off the walls, indicating that this student is causing a ruckus.
"The Luminary of the Stars is here!!" Kaito Momota shouts, his heroic pose visible despite the darkness.
Kokichi snorts, "Yeah, like you're going to be able to do anything. Can your astronaut eyes see through the dark, like a cat?" He questions, his voice teasing.
Everybody is capable of picking up on his "Neeheehee" horse laugh, and they manage to deduce that it's Kokichi.
"Gonta here," Gonta calls out, standing in the corner almost menacingly.
"I have also decided to join you," Kirumi Tojo says.
