I arrived at Green Dolphin Street Penitentiary with the weight of a new beginning. The unbearable smell of the cells, the echo of distant screams and the noise of the bars closing behind me made me feel a strange mixture of fear and resignation. I was led through the narrow corridors to the women's prison wing, the place where I would now spend most of my days. The walls were dirty and the environment was oppressive. The guard, without even looking at me, stopped in front of one of the cells. He opened the door with a loud bang and pushed me inside, the door closed behind me with a final, metallic clang. The cell, although small, had the basics: a dresser, a lamp that looked like it had seen its best days and a book left haphazardly on the table. None of this caught my attention, though. What really stopped me was the presence of a gigantic woman sitting in the corner, with a bowl of popcorn in her hands.
She had blonde and green hair, a strange and vibrant contrast to the gray and decaying surroundings. Her piercing green eyes watched me with a contempt that left no doubt about how she felt about my presence there. She gave an ironic smile and took another handful of popcorn into her mouth, while laughing, with a sound that echoed off the cell walls.
"A cell partner? Great! That's just what I wanted" She said, sarcasm evident in her voice, as she chewed noisily, making a hole of popcorn crumble between her teeth. I looked at her, still not understanding what I was betting on. She didn't seem at all intimidated by the situation, on the contrary, she seemed completely at ease, as if it were in her home. I was still trying to adjust to that new world when she, with a disinterested look "Here's the thing, friend. Even though this is a small cell, I want privacy. You stay on your side, I'll stay on mine, understand?" She said, with a low burp, before diving back into the bowl of popcorn, as if nothing else was relevant.
