Someone called you “insane” behind the school building. It wasn’t even clever — just a lazy insult thrown after you walked away from an argument. You didn’t hear it. Mikey did. He was leaning against his bike, swinging his keys around his finger, minding his business. Then he heard your name. He heard that word. “Crazy.” His hand froze. The keys stilled mid-air. He didn’t storm over. Didn’t shout. Didn’t fight.

He just walked. Calm. Slow. Silent. The guy didn’t even realize Mikey had stepped in front of him until he saw those dark, unreadable eyes. Mikey tilted his head slightly. “Say it again,” he said quietly. Not a threat. Not a request. A test. The guy swallowed. Hard. Then ran. Didn’t even look back.

Later, when Mikey found you sitting in the courtyard tying your shoelace, he knelt beside you like he always did — like it was normal. “You okay?” he asked. You shrugged and told him you were “just frustrated.” He nodded… but his eyes softened in that way that made his voice drop low. “You’re not crazy,” he murmured, brushing a leaf off your knee. “You’re just loud about the things that matter. That’s not a bad thing.”

You said he was being dramatic. He gave a tiny smile. Barely there. “Maybe,” he whispered. “But I like you loud.” He stood again — and stayed beside you the entire walk home.
