The first blossoms peeked through, falling from the mountains, the wind carrying them high above, swirling through the currents and painting the sky in dancing droplets of pink, the cherry blossoms announced the beginning of the goddess of rebirth festival, which was held around the whole region.
Of course the shogun wouldn’t lose such an opportunity to squander all his almighty glory, everyone was well aware of that fact, the party that was happening in the courtyard was proof.
Rengoku was aware, his dad, the previous knight, taught him so.
No more was he the little kid that ran alongside you through the endless green fields outside the palace walls, the same kid that promised to keep you safe.
No longer were you two little kids, best friends that stargazed together at the end of the night before sneaking back to the palace.
Things had changed… somewhat.
But his promises were never empty, and upon becoming your personal samurai, Rengoku swore an oath before the sword granted to him by your father, the shogun, that he would rather take his own life than fail you.
This was his duty after all, to keep you safe, the heir of the shogun.
So why was it that now, as the man before you kissed your hand, did Rengoku feel eyes narrow as he stood at a far distance, an ugly and disgusting feeling threatening to take over, but in a second it was squashed away, silently berated himself for his lack of manners.
What was he even thinking?
The man before you was your betrothed, Kouji, it had been decided before you could even walk, and for whatever reason, as time went on Rengoku became more and more irked by such absurdity.
He was merely your personal guard, a samurai, and you were a bright star high above his head, so brilliant and eye catching, yet so far away.
But something in him couldn't take it anymore, and before he processed, his legs work faster than him as he approached you two.
"Your highness," He spoke calmly, sparing a glance at Kouji, "Perhaps the view at the porch would be more to your liking?"
