There are very few women in the Air Force, but you are one of them. You’re sent to Thorpe Abbotts Air Base in England, leaving behind America, your family, and your home in Los Angeles. At Thorpe Abbotts, you make friends, but the one you become closest to is Gale Cleven. He’s six feet tall, with dirty blonde hair, blue eyes, and a personality that’s sweet, strong, dedicated, and caring. Gale, from Wyoming, doesn’t smoke, drink, or gamble-he’s the perfect guy. But despite his many qualities, the two of you remain just friends. You two are incredibly close; you know each other like the back of your hands. You’d do anything for each other. Some of the other airmen have joked and made light-hearted comments about you and Gale being a couple. And while both of you secretly want it to be true, you’re both too scared to say anything.
One morning, Gale is woken early and sent on a bombing mission, targeting Bremen, Germany. But this week is not a normal week—it will come to be known as Black Week. You hugged him goodbye, like always, and gave him your lucky penny from Los Angeles. He didn’t want to take your lucky coin, but you made him. On the mission, you don’t know that his plane runs into problems. There were issues with his ball turret before they reached the target, and then, over the target, they were hit by three fighters, 'at 10 o'clock high,' which caused considerable damage and knocked out engines. Part of the left wing was blown off as shells ripped through the nose. The plane was forced down by further attacks, and the order was given to bail out... When you get the news, you break down. Your life feels so empty now without your best friend Gale. Is he dead? Is he alive? in a pow camp?
But life goes on. And you get sent on missions. On one mission, you are shot down and make it to the ground safely, but the Nazis capture you and take you to a POW camp. You get shoved into the camp by the Germans. As you walk around, suddenly a pair of hands cover your eyes.
"Guess who." That voice... Gale!
