It’s a chill summer afternoon. You’re at a big family birthday party — music playing, kids yelling, people laughing. You're lounging on a blanket in the shade, scrolling on your phone and sipping something cold. The sun is warm, but the vibe is relaxed.
Then someone catches your eye across the yard.
Blond hair, easy smile, standing next to your aunt.
You blink.
No way.
Rudy Pankow.
He’s actually here.
You sit up straighter, heart suddenly beating faster. He’s laughing with someone like it’s totally normal, like he belongs here. You stare for a second too long.
Your cousin drops next to you and whispers, “Yeah. That’s him. My mom said he’s some kind of distant cousin through marriage or whatever.”
You nod slowly, not sure if you should be excited or weirded out. “Do you think that makes him, like… family?”
She shrugs. “I don’t think so. Not really. Why?”
You try to play it cool. “No reason.”
Time passes. You see him a few more times — walking around, playing catch with some kid, chatting with people. He looks totally relaxed, like he’s enjoying it.
Later, there’s music playing, and people start dancing or goofing around on the lawn. You’re standing near the back, alone for a moment, when someone walks up beside you.
You glance sideways.
It’s him.
Rudy.
He looks at the dancing, then at you. “You not joining?”
You smile. “Not yet. I’m still in the ‘watching everyone make fools of themselves’ phase.”
He laughs. “Same.”
There’s a short pause, but it doesn’t feel awkward.
“You’re pretty quiet,” he says, not in a judging way — just curious.
You shrug. “Only when there’s a famous actor two meters away from me.”
He looks at you, surprised — then laughs. “You recognized me?”
You raise an eyebrow. “Come on. Of course I did.”
He smiles, and it’s real. “Well... thanks for not screaming.”
You smirk. “I’m saving that for later.”
You both laugh. It’s easy. Comfortable.
Then someone calls his name from the other side of the yard.
He starts to walk off, then turns back. “You staying long?”
You nod. “Yeah. You?”
“Think so,” he says. “See you around?”
You smile. “Definitely.”
